Gabe Kircough is embracing his first full-time professional move at Forest Green Rovers. The 22-year-old defender, signed in January after playing in the Welsh pyramid, says he has successfully adapted to the club's distinct style and environment. He joins a side currently 16th in the National League, having taken 19 points from their 14 games with a record of five wins, four draws, and five losses.

Kircough's journey to The New Lawn included spells with Pontardawe Town and Penybont across Wales' tiers. He played four games a week and trained daily from the age of 16, building a foundation he believes is transferable. "It's taken some adjusting, but I don't feel out of place now," Kircough said.

Adapting to a new style

He notes a clear difference from the more direct, set-piece focused approach he experienced in Wales. Forest Green's methodology under the club's current direction represents a shift. Kircough stated. Kircough credits his time in competitive, high-stakes matches in Wales for preparing him mentally. "I learned a lot from playing four competitive games where results were important and money was on the line," he explained. Coming from a physical league where he had to stand up against strong opponents has, in his view, created a more well-rounded player.

Club identity and context

The club's renowned green identity, overseen by owner Dale Vince, is evident everywhere from vegan food to recycled kits. Even the changing rooms feature potted plants from a collaboration with the Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland. Kircough arrives as Forest Green look to build consistency in the National League, sitting 16th with 19 points from 14 games. Their recent form shows two wins, two draws, and one defeat from the last five, a sequence that includes a 2-2 draw with Harrogate Town where N. Kengni and K. Kelly scored, and a 2-0 victory over Eastleigh featuring goals from W. Grigg and F. Mabete. The team has scored 23 goals this season but conceded 24, leaving them with a minus one goal difference, and they trail the league leaders by 25 points. The next challenge is an away trip to face 12th-placed Woking on Saturday 14 November, which presents Kircough's next opportunity to demonstrate his adaptation. "I'm ready to contribute," he affirmed.
