Forest Green Rovers have unveiled a new houseplant installation in their home changing room designed to lower stress levels for players. The world's first carbon-neutral football club has placed over sixty plants in the space ahead of their National League home game against Harrogate Town this Saturday, aligning the move with International Stress Awareness Week.

Chairman Dale Vince stated the club pioneered the 'Football on Prescription' concept and that they believe time spent in nature is beneficial for people. The initiative is a partnership with the Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland and sports psychologist Dr Josephine Perry, testing the impact of greenery in an elite football environment.

Stress Statistics and Context

Research provided the context for the project, revealing that over half of Brits rarely access green spaces during winter. More than a third report that long stretches indoors make them feel worse, while 30% say living houseplants noticeably lower their stress. The same research ranked job interviews, difficult conversations and public speaking as the most nerve-wracking moments, with the pre-match countdown identified by 26% of respondents. With 39% of people wanting to greenify a high-stress room in their home this winter, the club aims to offer a practical model.

Monique Kemperman, PR and Events Lead at the Plants & Flowers Foundation Holland, collaborated on the installation. Dr Josephine Perry, the involved sports psychologist, has confirmed the stress-reducing benefits of the plants for athletes preparing for competition.

On-Field Context

The initiative comes as Forest Green prepare for a key phase in their season, sitting seventh in the National League with 81 points from 46 games, a record built on 23 wins, 12 draws and 11 defeats. Their recent form has been mixed, with two wins, one draw and two defeats in their last five outings, a sequence reflected in a WLWDL pattern. This run includes a 5-0 win over Chesham United and a 1-0 loss to Barrow. They head into the Harrogate match off the back of a 2-0 victory over Eastleigh last Saturday, with goals from Will Grigg and Fankaty Mabete. The team has scored 82 goals this season while conceding 52, giving them a goal difference of plus 30. Fans can view the team's full upcoming fixtures schedule as they look to close a 27-point gap to leaders York.

The houseplant installation will be fully operational for the visit of Harrogate Town on Saturday 31 October. The club's unique environmental leadership continues to intersect with performance, offering a green sanctuary before the pressure of a matchday.
